Spread betting on The Championship contenders

Wolverhampton Wanderers, Reading and Birmingham City are flying away with the Championship. An analysis of the sort of points total that the title contenders likely to achieve this season.

Wolves currently have 58 points and their season spread is 90.5-92 points with SportingIndex which appears to be underestimating them for the following reasons:

  • Going back 15 years, Wolves’ current points total is the fourth highest in the division after 26 games.
  • There have been six sides to have more than 55 points or more after 26 games and they finished the season with points totals of 90, 96, 98, 101, 105 and 106 with 5/6 teams crowned champions.
  • Wolves’ current points per game will get them 103 points, just three behind Reading’s league record from 05/06.
  • Wolves have twice managed a seven-game winning streaks this season which has only been achieved previously by Bolton in 96/97, who finished with 98 points that season.

Third-placed Birmingham have the same amount of points as second-placed Reading yet have a final points spread of 82.5-84 points compared to 86-87.5.

  • No team in third place at this stage of the season has ever had as many points at Birmingham.
  • Their current points per game would see them finish the season with 91 points.
  • Of Birmingham’s remaining opponents they have a W11-D5-L4 record against them already this season.
  • Only five teams, relegated the previous season, have finished their first season back in the Championship with 80 points or more.
  • All the teams that have finished a Championship season with 85 points or more have all played in the Premier League at some stage.
