Real Madrid started the summer transfer season with a bang as they smashed the record transfer figure first on Kaka and the Ronaldo. Bettorlogic bring you a round-up of the key stats for the star names appearing on the rumour mill this week using our unique player analysis tool Player PRO.
NB Player appearances are based on a player starting and completing at least an hour of the match unless otherwise stated. The sample is based on a team’s home and away league matches since the start of last season unless otherwise stated.
GLEN JOHNSON
Glen Johnson looks to be on his way to Liverpool after the Reds agreed a fee with Portsmouth for the England right-back. Johnson’s stats since signing for Pompey are very impressive having won 42% and lost 32% of the 57 matches he has played while the team won only one of 15 matches without him and lost 73% of the time. In fact Portsmouth’s PPG has fallen by 74% from 1.53 to 0.40 when Johnson has not been playing. When Johnson has not played then Portsmouth have scored 58% fewer goals (1.26 goals per game to 0.53) and conceded 67% more goals (1.12 to 1.87).
RICARDO CARVALHO
Jose Mourinho looks poised to be reunited with Ricardo Carvalho at Inter Milan. Carvalho has missed much of the past two seasons, playing 29 times and missing 47 matches. However when he has played Chelsea have won 79% of the time compared to 57% without him – a drop in PPG of 20% from 2.52 to 2.02. While the Blues have actually conceded 39% more goals with Carvalho playing (0.79 compared to 0.57 goals against without Carvalho) they keep slightly more clean sheets when he plays – 59% with and 55% without.
KAKA
For £56 million Real Madrid will expect Kaka to have the same affect in Spain as he had in Milan. Since the start of last season the Brazilian has played 56 of 76 games for AC and won 59% of the matches he has played while Milan won only 35% of the time without him. In fact their average ppg fell by 35% without him – from 2.0 to 1.30. The former World Player of the Year has contributed at both ends of the pitch as he has scored 31 times and also helped Milan keep clean sheets in 39% of their matches as opposed to just 30% when he has been absent.
CRISTIANO RONALDO
Real Madrid have finally landeded the World Player of the Year following a record £80 million outlay. Ronaldo has missed just 16 matches for Man Utd since the start of last season and his absence has definitely been felt. United have won 75% and lost just 8% of matches with Ronaldo compared to winning 63% and losing 25% without him as their ppg has fallen by 17% from 2.42 to 2.00. He has also contributed 47 goals and without that return the team’s average goals scored has fallen by 24% from 2.05 goals per game to just 1.56.
ALEXANDRE PATO
With the arrival of Carlo Ancelotti at Chelsea, Pato appears to have been installed as the Blues number one transfer target. Despite still a teenager ‘the Duck’ has become a key figure at Milan and has scored 20 goals in 37 games since the start of last season. While his presence has not had the same significant affect on Milan’s results as Kaka’s he has still been a key figure for Milan in the final third as the Italian giants have failed to score in 15% of their matches without him compared to just 5% when he has played.
SERGIO AGUERO
The young Argentinean has been closely linked with Chelsea on the back of another exceptional season at Atletico Madrid where he led the team to Champions League qualification for a second consecutive season. In the past two seasons Atletico have won 57% of the 65 matches Aguero has played while in 11 matches without him they have gone W2-D2-L7. His impact has seen Atletico average 2.0 goals per game compared to 1.45 gpg without him and his personal tally stands at 33.
SAMUEL ETO’O
Despite scoring 36 goals in all competitions for Barcelona this season the Catalans have admitted they will listen to offers for the Cameroon hitman – with Chelsea and Man City thought to be at the front of the queue. Eto’o has played 51 of Barcelona’s 76 matches since the start of last season and found the net on 46 occasions. With him in the team Barca have averaged 2.69 goals per game compared to just 1.76 when he has been missing – a 35% decrease.
DAVID VILLA
With Valencia suffering from a financial crisis, David Villa looks certain to be moving this summer. Without their star striker they have struggled severely over the last two seasons, picking up just 0.90 ppg and winning only 24% of the 21 matches he has missed compared to 1.71 ppg and a win rate of 51% when he has played. His importance is highlighted by the 45 goals he has scored in the 55 matches he has played.
ZLATAN IBRAHIMOVIC
The big Swede is reportedly a target for Barcelona if Eto’o is moved on this summer. He has played 56 of Inter’s 76 games since the start of last season and has an impressive goals return of 39. However, his impact on Inter’s results has been minimal as they have almost identical records with and without him.
FRANCK RIBERY
The French winger is wanted by all the top clubs throughout Europe but his performances for Bayern over the past two seasons have not led to a hugely significant improvement in the Bavarian side’s results as they have won 64% of 47 matches with Ribery compared to 57% of 21 matches without. However a closer look shows that he has been very effective against the better teams as Bayern have averaged 2.09 ppg against top-half teams in the 22 matches he has played compared to just 1.64 ppg in the 11 matches he has missed – a 22% drop.
KARIM BENZEMA
Lyon’s young French striker is being targeted by the likes of Manchester United and Barcelona and following a disappointing season for Lyon may decide it’s time to move on. The Frenchman has been hugely influential over the past two seasons as Lyon have averaged 2.04 ppg in the 55 matches he has played compared to just 1.81 in the 21 he has missed. This drop in ppg is due to Lyon losing a third of the matches he has missed compared to just 13% of those he has played. He has also weighed in with a personal goals tally of 31 and helped the team average 1.71 goals per game when he has been playing while this has fallen by 11% without him to 1.52 goals per game.
CARLOS TEVEZ
The Argentinean’s future could dictate several of the other transfers as Liverpool, Man City and Real Madrid are amongst the suitors should Man Utd fail to sign him up. United’s stats are similar with and without him as they average 2.31 ppg in the 49 games he has played and 2.37 in the 27 games he has missed. Similarly United’s striking partnerships all produce very similar results regardless of who is partnered together out of Tevez, Rooney and Berbatov. In particular Tevez and Rooney have won 68% and lost 8% of their 25 matches together compared to United winning 75% and losing 14% of the rest of their games since the start of last season.
MICHAEL OWEN
Owen’s career has been on a downward spiral since signing for Newcastle and he had little impact for the Toon as they fought for survival this season. Since the start of last term Owen has played 42 of Newcastle’s 76 matches and has found the net just 16 times as the team won only 21% and collected 0.98 ppg of their matches with him compared to winning 26% (1.06 ppg) of the matches he missed.
